Juneteenth Celebration Kicks off Sunday

There will be a Juneteenth celebration in Pittsfield on Sunday June 16, 2024 in Durant Park, beginning with a parade from City Hall @ 9 AM, hosted by NAACP of Berkshire County. In honor of our commitment to our community, the Board of REALTORS is a proud partner of this event. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, the last enslaved people in Texas would not become free until June 19, 1865, when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas.  This day marks our country’s second independence day. “The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.” – Smithsonian Museum of African American Culture and History.

Thank you to the NAACP of the Berkshires for hosting this fun, informative, family-friendly, community celebration.
